Choose local and seasonal

Whenever possible, buy locally grown flowers and foliage that are naturally in season. Local flowers generally travel shorter distances, are often fresher and support Australian growers and small flower farms.

Rather than expecting every flower to be available year-round, embrace what is naturally flowering now. Seasonal flowers, native foliage, grasses, branches and seed heads can create beautiful arrangements that reflect the season and the landscape.

Ask where your flowers come from

Ask your florist or supplier: Where were these flowers grown? Are they locally grown? Are they in season?

Skip the plastic sleeve

Many bouquets are still wrapped in single-use plastic sleeves. When buying flowers, ask for no plastic wrapping. Choose paper wrapping, reusable packaging or simply carry your flowers home unwrapped.

Choose foam-free arrangements

Traditional floral foam is a single-use plastic product. Look for florists using reusable mechanics, vases, wire, pin holders and other foam-free techniques instead.
